Issue 63, December 15, 1998

A new movie is playing at the IMAX Theater at Broadway at the Beach. 'T-Rex: Back to the Cretaceous' is a fictional short movie, unlike the documentaries that normally are featured at IMAX Theaters.

The beach renourishment project which has been ongoing for the last 2 years is complete. Barring any major storms the sand will last about 10 years.

The north-south Carolina Bays Parkway has received final approval from federal environmental agencies. Actually building the northern half of the road will begin next, and will take at least 2 years. This will provide a much-needed bypass route to U.S. 17 for North Myrtle Beach.

Cromer's Peanuts, located on U.S. 17 Business south of the Pavilion, is a great place to go if you are a kid or a kid at heart. Besides lots of candy and other sweets, they sell and rent many of the fun items other businesses use (such as cotton candy machines). A great place to stop and have a look around.

Grand Strand facts: Over 12 million visitors each year, over $1.5 billion spent, average length of visit is more than twice the national average (almost a week). Reasons people come, in order: beach, restaurants, shopping, theaters, golf, amusement parks.

This is the last regular issue of the Myrtle Beach News. I have enjoyed writing this newsletter over the past 3 years, but my obligations have become more numerous lately and I have found that I don't have sufficient time to continue publishing. If a really huge story breaks along the strand, I will put out a special issue.

Here are two other Grand Strand newsletters that you can subscribe to:

The Myrtle Beach Live site operates the Beach Blast newsletter. Go to http://sag.myrtlebeachlive.com/beachblast to sign up. Another newsletter is available at http://www.nmbcondos.com.

Both of these publications are more 'commercial' than mine, and you won't read anything even remotely negative about the beach (no coverage of the controversial Memorial Day Biker Weekend, for example), but I hope some of you will find them informative.

The web page (http://www.mbsc.com) will continue, although there won't be any news updates there, either, except for the special issues. It will continue to feature the link list, the Beauty and the Beach photos, and a past archive of the newsletters.

The future of the Myrtle Beach area looks bright. The transportation problems are being addressed, with the Conway Bypass, Carolina Bays Parkway, and the widening of S. C. 544 all in progress. There are more entertainment venues, shopping facilities, restaurants, golf courses, and other attractions than ever. And there's always those 60 miles of beaches. Teenagers still love to cruise the Boulevard, and kids still love to ride the rides at the Pavilion. The Grand Strand is, now more than ever, a great place to have fun.

Thanks to everyone for subscribing, thanks for the positive feedback I have received from many of you, and take care. See you at the beach!
