Hale Irwin won the Energizer Senior Tour Championship this year, by 5 shots. Next year the golf tournament will be renamed the Ingersoll-Rand Senior Tour Championship (they make industrial equipment) and will be held at the new TPC of Myrtle Beach course.
Due to low water depth at Murrells Inlet, the Victori Casino gambling ship has moved to Little River. It has begun the gambling cruises out to sea that serve up to 350 passengers. The company does not have a liquor license yet. Some gamblers get seasick on the trip, so be prepared if you go.
Crook and Chase, a popular talk show on TNN, will begin broadcasting during the summer months each year from Myrtle Beach. The Gatlin Brothers Theater will be renamed the Crook and Chase Celebrity Theater. The rest of the year a musical, 'Summer of 66', about young people vacationing at the beach, will be presented. One of the Gatlin Brothers, Steve, will still be associated with the theater.
A 3-D movie theater, the PanOmax 3-D, is being planned for the Pavilion area. The Gay Dolphin gift shop will operate the show, which will surround the viewer with a 360 degree view.
900 acres of the former air base are back up for sale. One bid is from a developer who wants to build an urban village of homes, shops, and offices. Burroughs and Chapin has proposed swapping their soon-to-be-replaced Myrtle Square Mall for the land, with an industrial park to be built on the land and the former mall turned into a new convention center.
