Issue 58, September 1, 1998
As many of you already know, Hurricane Bonnie directed most of her wrath at the beaches of North Carolina. The Grand Strand did receive winds and rain from the southwest quadrant of the storm, which is the weakest portion.
There was a fair amount of superficial damage to businesses. Signs and awnings were down in a number of places. Most if not all of the businesses should be re-open by now.
A side of the Palace Theater was damaged, but it has reopened for business, as have all other area live theaters. In Myrtle Beach, the Sea Gypsy on 4th Ave. N. sustained damage, and 5 Cherry Grove hotels lost their roofs. Being closer to North Carolina, the Cherry Grove and Little River areas were hardest hit along the strand. Part of the Dunkin' Donuts collapsed there. An early estimate is $30 million worth of damage to the north areas. Further south damage was very light. Surfside and the Georgetown county areas of the strand had mostly downed trees.
No erosion problems resulted from the storm, due to its moderate nature and the wind direction, which was out toward the sea.
