The Myrtle Beach Factory Stores have just opened 80,000 square feet of new stores. The lineup is: Disney Catalog Outlet, Duck Head, Polo / Ralph Lauren, Nike, Brooks Brothers, Jones New York, Pfaltzgraff, Colours and Scents, Easy Spirit, and Steiffel.

The LPGA City of Hope Myrtle Beach Classic was won this year by Karrie Webb, who defended her title from last year. Next year organizers are hoping to move the tournament to May, so it doesn't compete with the men's Heritage Classic down in Hilton Head.

Burroughs and Chapin is exploring the idea of replacing Myrtle Square Mall with a new one million square foot supermall, to be located off US 17 Bypass between the airport and the US 501 intersection. Dillard's is interested in placing a store in the new mall, and most of the current Myrtle Square Mall tenants would probably move. The old mall might be converted to office space.

The boat landing at Murrells Inlet, which is the only spot between Little River and Georgetown that boats longer than 16 feet can use to access the ocean, has been closed for repairs for 120 days. The timing of this has numerous businesses and locals up in arms, coming at the start of the busy season. Some public officials are calling for a delay until winter.

Seaboard Commons, the strip of superstores next to Broadway at the Beach, is getting a Toys 'R' Us later this year.

New grocery superstores are coming to the strand. Food Lion will fill the old Farmer Jack's in Restaurant Row, and in November will replace Green's at 1304 US 17 Business. Bi-Lo will come to the beach with 4 stores soon. WalMart and Kmart are adding grocery operations as well. The famous Boulineau's Emporium in Cherry Grove is completing a remodeling and expansion. (Everyone visiting Cherry Grove should check out Boulineau's at least once. Pick up a free tide schedule and see the pork shaped into a pig's body, complete with sunglasses, in the meat section.)
