Issue 50, February 13, 1998
At the location of the old Chapin store in central Myrtle Beach, a new miniature golf course should be open by Easter. Mount Atlanticus will be three stories tall.
The Liberty Steakhouse Brewpub at Broadway at the Beach has two new beers available, Cherry Stout and British Mild.
The new owners of the Outlet Park discount shopping center have changed the complex's name to Wacammaw Factory Shoppes. The malls will be expanded and renovated as well.
Fat Tuesday, a bar in the Celebrity Circle portion of Broadway at the Beach, will hold a Mardi Gras party on, appropriately enough, Fat Tuesday (February 24 this year).
The Hilton in Myrtle Beach is now the Wyndham Myrtle Beach Resort, and is undergoing a renovation as well.
One of the Eagles beachwear stores has opened a youth apparel store-within-a-store called Pipeline, at the chain's 301 S. Kings Highway location. If successful, other Eagles outlets will get Pipelines as well.
The Ocean Lakes Family Campground in Surfside, the Grand Strand's largest, was named the RV Park of the Year by the National Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds.
Coming this year you can logon to the Myrtle Beach Better Business Bureau web site (www.mb.bbb.org) and check out the reputations of local companies.
The Memorial Day Bike Week Task Force, in charge of planning a better and more organized Black Biker Weekend this year, has made several announcements. The site of the former air base will be used for activities and overflow crowds. A professional organization has been hired to help, corporate sponsors are being solicited, and volunteers are being recruited. Considerably more portable toilets will be brought in. And a much beefed-up law enforcement effort will be present.
With final funding in place, a second groundbreaking for the Conway Bypass was held recently, and work has begun on completing the suspended project. It should be complete in about three years, with the US 17 to SC 90 portion open even sooner. It will only be two lanes, but expansion in the future to 4 or 6 lanes will be easy, and it will be built without traffic lights or stop signs. At the groundbreaking, the governor acknowledged the huge profitability to the state of Grand Strand tourism, and the need for improved roads in the area.
The Myrtle Beach portion of beach renourishment is done. Surfside and Garden City will see their beaches renourished later this year. The Arcadian Shores area, a one mile stretch between Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach (in the vicinity of Restaurant Row), was left out of the project, but officials are looking for additional funding to handle this section of beach.
Brookgreen Gardens has received a substantial donation and is planning a Lowcountry Life Center, showcasing rice plantation lifestyles of centuries past.
Some other construction projects going on along the strand: Alabama Grill and Bullwinkle's theme restaurants, Holiday Inn Express, Courtyard by Marriott, the NASCAR Speedpark, Martin's Golf and Tennis Superstore, and a Lowe's.
My apologizes for the large gap between issues. I came down with a bad cold several weeks ago and was out if action for awhile.
