Issue 42, September 16, 1997
For only the third time since they've been keeping records, there were no Atlantic hurricanes during the month of August this year. The El Nino weather pattern, which is very strong currently, is believed to be responsible for the quiet season.
A new show has opened at Fantasy Harbour. In the building formerly housing Snoopy's Magic on Ice, 'Big Band at the Savoy' is now playing. Featuring big band music plus sketches, the show plays at 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday, plus 4 p.m. shows Monday through Thursday. Admission is $25, with discounts for seniors and children. Call 803-236-8500.
A 'microburst' associated with a thunderstorm hit Myrtle Beach Friday in the southern section of the central oceanfront motel row. Damage was mostly minor, but the Sea Hawk motel lost its roof. All the hotels remain open.
One of the discount airlines serving the Grand Strand, Air South, has shut down operations. Jet Express, which is the primary discount air service to the beach, says it will add additional flights to fill in the gap.
In an experiment to try to control beach erosion, large concrete disks were installed at Garden City Beach some months ago, but they have now been removed. Too many tourists were tripping on them. They may be reinstalled in the winter. The disk company claims they help prevent erosion, but some local scientists are doubtful they do any good.
The area-wide beach renourishment project is skipping one section of beach. Arcadian Shores, a mile long area between Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach, was left out, and there doesn't appear to be any money left to include it in the project.
The rumored Labor Day return of the black bikers never came to pass. Only a handful of black motorcyclists were seen scattered around the strand.
The Pavilion is considering the addition of a new small roller coaster (a 'wild mouse' type) next year. No word on whether this would replace or supplement the current small coaster (the looping 'Corkscrew' will definitely remain). Several children's rides will be added as well.
A new bar has opened in North Myrtle Beach at 205 Main Street and Ocean Boulevard. The Shark Bar (formerly the Pirate's Cove) features live music, food, pool, darts, and a happy hour from 6 to 8 (why does 'happy hour' always last more than an hour?). Rick Derringer will be appearing Oct. 12. Open Monday through Thursday at 6 p.m., Friday and Saturday at 5 p.m. Call 803-249-8942.
If you own beach property and rent it occasionally on your own, make sure you collect the accommodations tax and forward it to the state of South Carolina. Both Charleston and Hilton Head have seen recent checks done to make sure this is being collected. If you use an agency to rent your property, the taxes are being collected and forwarded for you. As always, ignorance of the law is not an excuse.
