Issue 30, March 11, 1997
Voters in Georgetown County approved Sunday liquor sales at restaurants by a 2 to 1 margin. Business owners were concerned about the lost Sunday sales to next door Horry County (home of most of the Grand Strand). A number of restaurants had even popped up right next to the county line, and Sunday business in Murrells Inlet and points south have been poor. Owners that purchase a special license can now serve liquor by the drink, beginning this weekend.
Speaking of those county-line restaurants, T.G.I. Friday's will be opening a second Grand Strand location on US 17 next to the Outback and the others soon.
The IMAX huge screen theater at Broadway at the Beach is adding two new films shortly. On March 14 a Rolling Stones concert film, 89 minutes long, will begin showing. Super Speedway, a look at Indy car racing, will premiere in May.
The small state of South Carolina, long served by just one area code (803), will soon have three. The upstate got its own code recently, and the coastal areas (including the Grand Strand) will get a new area code of 843. The new code will begin on March 22, 1998, and be required by Sep. 27 of that year.
The troubles at TPI, the company that had been planning a huge amusement park on the old Air Force Base land, have caused the resignation of the organization's president. The new president admits getting the project off the ground is now a very tall order.
The Canadian American Days Festival is going on now through Sunday. Geared towards the annual weeklong holidays that most Canadians get this time of year, the festival will overlap St. Patrick's Day events on Saturday.
