The city of Myrtle Beach is accelerating its plans for beach renourishment. The ongoing project, now being worked on in the North Myrtle Beach area, should see a Myrtle Beach startup in February. Officials are hoping to complete the city's portion by the second week of June. The three phases for Myrtle Beach will be 29th Ave. S. to 33rd Ave. N., 52nd Ave. N. to the Dunes residential section, and 52nd Ave. N. to 33rd Ave. N.

The Grand Strand will play host to the LPGA Golf Classic on April 17 through 20, and a title sponsor has been lined up. For the first time in LPGA history, it's a charitable organization, the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Wachesaw East will play host to 144 golfers. The Golf Channel will cover the event on TV.

Officials are considering doing periodic testing on the ocean water quality along the strand, especially at the four swashes that empty collected runoff from inland areas into the ocean. This testing has not been done in sixteen years, and water samples at the swashes collected by Coastal Carolina University recently indicated some pollution. The type detected is that of animal fecal matter. No raw human sewage is emptied into the ocean in the area, and the type of testing that needs to be done would check for bacteria and viruses that are known to cause human illness. There is no proof that anyone has gotten sick by swimming in ocean waters near the swashes, but some concern has been raised.

The Dining Hotline has been set up on the Grand Strand. Visitors can call 444-4000 while in Myrtle Beach and interact with a menu system that informs them of restaurant type, menus, locations, and hours of operation. The service is looking to add more restaurants to the service in the near future.

The Caravelle Resort complex in northern Myrtle Beach is adding on another fourteen story building. And the Long Bay Resort will be built soon four blocks north of the Caravelle, featuring 200 rooms, a lazy river, and multiple swimming pools.

The Great American Trolley Company, which operates a trolley shuttle service from Springmaid Pier to 30th Ave. N. along Ocean Boulevard, received a five year renewal of its franchise agreement with the city.

Later this winter a series of big band concerts will be held at the Gatlin Brothers Theater. On Feb. 13 through 15, 20 through 22, and Feb. 27 to March 1, the "Moments to Remember" show will feature Steve Gatlin, Kenna West, and Nell Ciaccio.
