Issue 23, December 4, 1996
I had the pleasure of seeing the Radio City Music Hall Rockettes' Christmas Show at the Palace Theater this past weekend, and it was excellent. The two hour show (less a twenty minute intermission) is well worth the admission. The high-stepping dancers are as talented as always, the sets are beautiful, and the other performers are great also. There is a 'teddy bear' version of the Nutcracker which is very cute, and the Rockettes do their famous parade of wooden toy soldiers, capped by a cannon going off, and the soldiers falling over domino style - very slowly (it takes several minutes). Another scene stars five elves named Jiggle, Squiggle, Wiggle, Giggle, and (of course) Bruce. The performers have been working on their routines for months now, spending the previous month down here in Myrtle Beach rehearsing, and it shows.
You have until December 21 to see them, with two or three shows daily (on weekends the shows are at 11 a.m., 2 p.m., and 8 p.m.). Tickets for the 8 p.m. shows are virtually sold out already, but there should be some left for earlier performances. If you miss them this year, you can always go in 1997; it has already been announced that the Rockettes show will return next year. Tickets are $32 - $38 ($16 for children). Call 800-905-4228 or 803-448-0588.
The printed program for the Rockettes show has an entertaining advertisement from the Crab House: "Obviously, you've got great taste in legs. After the show, give ours a try...".
Planet Hollywood is open for business. The food is good (a little better than the Hard Rock Cafe in my humble opinion), and there is more seating available, so lines should not be as much of a problem as they have been at Myrtle Beach's Hard Rock. We had no trouble getting immediate seating at 4:30 p.m. The restaurant is nicely decorated, with lots of movie props and costumes on display, and all the menu items have movie tie-ins. Check out the place mat on your table - it's filled with high school photos of celebrities. The pricing is a bit higher than a similar 'non-theme' restaurant would be, but you're paying for the atmosphere. There are also multiple gift shops with branded merchandise, including the $325 reversible leather jacket. The grand opening, with celebrity guests, will be next spring, and will be in conjunction with the opening of an All Star Cafe (a sports themed restaurant) next door. The major Planet Hollywood investors include Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Demi Moore, Sylvestor Stallone, and Don Johnson. No word on who will show up in Myrtle Beach. Oftentimes local celebrities are also invited (Hootie and the Blowfish are likely candidates). The All Star Cafe opening might include Tiger Woods and Monica Seles.
This Saturday and Sunday (December 7 and 8) the Springmaid Beach Craft Show will take place at 3200 South Ocean Boulevard in Myrtle Beach. Over 300 exhibitors will be showing their wares. 9-5 Saturday, 10-4 Sunday, free admission. Call 803-238-5189 for more information.
An update on the dates of the Fantasy Harbour Christmas shows: The Gatlin Brothers and Ronnie Milsap Christmas shows end on December 14, not December 21 as was previously announced. These shows will be at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. each day. Milsap will then play his regular shows from December 26 - 30 at 8 p.m., and host a special New Year's Eve Party on December 31 starting at 9 p.m.
