Recent restaurant openings along the coast:

A new restaurant based on the Jackaroo Australian-style barbecue sauce is being built in North Myrtle Beach at 13th Ave. N. It will naturally feature steaks. An Adjoining Hooter's will also be built at the site.

The Wild Wing Cafe, showcasing appetizers (wings, of course, plus others), plenty of choices in beer (20 on tap, 70 in bottles), and entrees along the lines of ribs and burgers, has opened in Restaurant Row. Located at the north end of the area, the cafe also has live music some nights, and an outdoor deck overlooking the Intracoastal. Call (803) 692-WING for more info.

Murrells Inlet (US 17 Business) has a new Spring House restaurant, joining the others in Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach. These locations serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner and feature a balcony of real live birds chirping away.

The Texas Roadhouse, another chain outlet, is open in Garden City on US 17 Business. They feature reasonably priced steaks and other entrees, plenty of beer choices, and peanuts which you may freely consume as you dump the shells on the floor (obviously a casual place). Another similarly named restaurant, the Carolina Roadhouse, opened last year at 47th Ave. N. and US 17 Business, with steaks, seafood, and ribs on the menu. The owners also operate the California Dreaming chain in Columbia, Charleston, and Greenville.

The Melting Pot, a fondue chain restaurant with outlets around the Carolinas, has opened on US 17 Business and 50th Ave. N. You can get fondue items as appetizers, entrees, and even desserts. Open seven days a week (dinnertime only), prices range from $7 to $20.

The chain outlet TGI Friday's has opened a second restaurant along the Grand Strand, this one on US 17 Business in Garden City, just in front of the Inlet Square mall. it joins the second Outback Steakhouse along the coast, and the Lone Start Steakhouse, in the immediate vicinity.

Earlier this year Grandma's Saloon and Grill opened at Broadway at the Beach. If you'd just like to try some of 100 hot sauces on their wall of fire, show up between 4 and 7 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. Chocolates from San Francisco are also featured.

Last year saw the opening of the Winners Circle, an auto racing theme restaurant in North Myrtle Beach on US 17. The building looks more like a garage than a restaurant from the outside, with race cars on display. The menu is varied. Also opened last year is Chilaca's, a Mexican restaurant across the street and just down from Broadway at the Beach on US 17 Bypass. The usual Mexican fare is accompanied by festive decorations inside, plus a small gift shop with plenty of hot sauces to choose from. Joining them in the Mexican category this year is a second El Cerro Grande on US 17 Business and 2nd Ave. S. in Myrtle Beach; their other location is in Surfside.

For an unusual dining experience, try Spectators Bar and Grill in the Restaurant Row section. Four of the booths feature individual televisions with working tuners and a full cable hookup. The booths may be reserved, or you can just show up and hope one is available. This facility is a sports bar, with game tables supplementing the food and drink.

The NASCAR Cafe going up across from Broadway at the Beach has had its opening delayed, due to Hurricane Bertha saturating the work site. No new date yet, but it will be sometime after Labor Day.

The three enclosed shopping malls along the Grand Strand, Myrtle Square, Inlet Square, and Briarcliffe, will all ban smoking on the first of August. This will affect the central walkways only; individual stores will set their own policies.
